What is electricity deregulation?
In deregulated states, consumers can choose their electricity supplier — the company that generates and sells the power — while the utility company still maintains the wires and handles delivery. Competition between suppliers drives rates down and gives consumers options for fixed-rate, variable, or renewable plans. Texas, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey, and Connecticut all have deregulated markets.
